Service Description

This course is designed for your child to build and program a different robot each week for the first half of the course and then use the skills developed in the first three weeks to design and program a robot that completes a specified task. In addition to working with robotics and computer programming, students will be engaged in following directions, critical thinking and problem solving. Your child will build a real robot each week, but don't expect that they will build Rosey the Robot (from the Jetsons). The robots we build will be simple and perform a specific task with the programming your child provides. The first course robots are intended for your child to make a concrete connection between what parts a robot has (physical) and the directions a robot is given (programming). They will learn the importance of the structure of a robot and the clarity of the programming. For example, if you want the robot to move forward it must have a motor and a wheel AND your program must tell it to move forward. Establishing these basic understandings will help your child to become efficient problem solvers and be able to think about both the physical and programming for more complex robots in the future. As a teacher, I know that children need positive and quick feedback to enjoy the learning process. The first robots are designed to give quick success and meet specific learning outcomes. This is gratifying when learning something new. The second half of the class is designed to engage students in a "productive struggle." This will take what they have learned so far and ask them to apply to solve a problem. They will see that the objective is simple enough, but will struggle to work out the solution. When they solve the problem, they will feel the success that motivates more learning.
